NYU Florence, in partnership with Lo schermo dell’arte festival, is thrilled to welcome filmmaker Garrett Bradley from New Orleans for an exclusive masterclass. Known for her powerful and evocative approach to filmmaking, Bradley merges lyrical realism with historical insight and intimate narrative, exploring social justice, race, and identity themes. Her acclaimed documentary Time (2020), which sensitively examines the impact of mass incarceration on families, has garnered international recognition, including over fifty award nominations and twenty wins. This impressive list includes an Oscar nomination and the historic win as the first Black woman to receive the Best Director Award in the US Documentary Competition at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
Bradley’s accolades extend beyond cinema, including the prestigious Prix de Rome (2019), the Arts and Letters Award for Art from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2022), and the Eye Art & Film Prize from Amsterdam’s Eye Filmmuseum (2023). Her work has been honored with solo exhibitions at major institutions such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, underscoring her unique role at the intersection of art, activism, and cinema.
This collaboration between NYU Florence and Lo schermo dell’arte festival brings a prominent international artist to the heart of Florence and enriches the city’s vibrant cultural landscape. It represents a unique opportunity for students and the wider community to engage directly with Bradley’s work and insights, immersing themselves in a dialogue that bridges local and global cultural frameworks.
