How do we recover voices long silenced, and how do representations of marginalized bodies (and lands) challenge dominant narratives in history?
The international conference Hidden in Plain Sight brings these and other urgent questions into sharper focus. Hosted by the NIKI and NYU Florence, the three-day event confronts the lived realities and visual representations of Black Africans in the early modern period. Impossible to ignore are the stark atrocities of slavery that shaped them.
Through collective, interdisciplinary inquiry—spanning history and art history, African (diaspora) studies, anthropology, literary studies, and musicology—this gathering will expand our understanding of race, colonialism, and cross-cultural exchange in the 14th-17th centuries, grounding historical reflection in the pressing questions of the present.
