The major obstacle for amateur filmmakers is their own sense of inferiority vis-a-vis professional productions. The very classification “amateur” has an apologetic ring. But that very word – from the Latin “amateur” – “lover” means one who does something for the love of the thing rather than for economic reasons or necessity. (Maya Deren).

On the occasion of the digitization of the amateur 35mm film that was found in the Acton collection, at Villa La Pietra, and which has recently been restored, the symposium “Private Cinema” will be a round table on amateur and private cinema, starting from the case of the Acton family’s collection.

Speakers:
Francesca Baldry, Acton Collection Manager
Rossella Catanese, Lecturer of “History of Italian Cinema”, NYU Florence
Scott Palmer, Lecturer in “Italian Sketchbook: Travel Writing and Storytelling”, NYU Florence
Luca Ferro, Filmmaker and Teacher at the University of Florence)
Marco Pagni Fontebuoni, Film restorer
Paolo Simoni, Founder and Director of Home Movies
